The No/Low market  covering alcohol-free drinks and low-alcohol beverages – will exceed USD 2 billion in the spirits segment by 2028 (source: IWSR). On a non-alcoholic spirit, closure choice becomes strategic: without alcohol to carry the aromatics, even the slightest cork-related deviation is immediately perceptible. The natural cork T-top with wood, plastic or zamak head is the reference closure for premium non-alcoholic spirits. P&J manufactures premium and sustainable bar tops for the most demanding brands in non-alcoholic spirits, non-alcoholic aperitifs and alcohol-free mixology.

The No/Low market – redefining premium spirits packaging

Non-alcoholic spirits and low-alcohol beverages are the fastest-growing segment of the drinks industry.

According to IWSR, the No/Low spirits market is valued at over USD 1.3 billion in 2025 and is expected to exceed USD 2 billion by 2028, with annual value growth of +12%. Pioneering brands – Seedlip (acquired by Diageo), Lyre’s, Martini Floreale, Tanqueray 0.0, Ritual Zero Proof – have established a premium standard, shelved at the back-bar alongside the great houses of gin, whisky and rum.

This premiumisation places a new demand on the closure. A spirit is opened and resealed 30–50 times over a bottle’s lifetime, often more in alcohol-free mixology.

The closure becomes a repeated touchpoint between brand, bartender and consumer, and a quality signal visible at the back-bar.

What is a non-alcoholic spirit?

Non-alcoholic spirits, part of the No/Low market, are spirit drinks with 0.0% to 0.5% ABV (No) or with a low alcohol content between 0.5% and 1.2% ABV (Low). These alcohol-free drinks are produced from distillates, macerates or infusions of botanicals – juniper, citrus, spices, aromatic plants.

The No/Low market covers several subcategories: alcohol-free botanical gins for non-alcoholic cocktails and premium mixology; non-alcoholic aperitifs (bitters, amaros, dealcoholised vermouths); 0.0% rums and whiskies; and low-alcohol beverages (1 to 8% ABV), often ready to serve.

Their aromatic signature depends entirely on the quality of the botanicals – which makes closure choice decisive.

Why the T-cork is the essential closure for premium non-alcoholic spirits

The T-cork, or bar top, is a closure made of a natural cork body topped with a decorative head in wood, plastic or zamak. Its shape enables instant grip by the bartender, an audible opening ritual, and stable resealing cycle after cycle – a decisive asset for alcohol-free mixology in premium bars.

Three technical reasons make it the reference for premium non-alcoholic spirits:

  1. Preserved sealing across all usage cycles. Where synthetic stoppers deform quickly, natural cork retains elasticity and sealing performance throughout the bottle’s life.
  2. Absolute aromatic neutrality, a non-negotiable for a non-alcoholic spirit. Without alcohol to carry and mask, foreign aromatics – TCA (2,4,6-trichloroanisole) in particular – become immediately detectable. A TCA-free cork is the only closure compatible with the standards of a premium non-alcoholic spirit.
  3. A premium signal at the back-bar. The audible pop, gesture and crafted head signal quality when consumers order a non-alcoholic cocktail.

Wood, plastic, zamak – choosing the head that fits your alcohol-free brand

The head material defines the perceived positioning of the bottle on the No/Low market. P&J manufactures all three main families.

Wood top T-cork

The wood top is the most premium and most sustainable option. It is the closure of choice for non-alcoholic spirits brands rooted in craft positioning or eco-responsible commitment.

Wood is biodegradable and can be personalised through laser engraving or hot stamping to integrate the brand logo or signature. It is the reference choice for premium non-alcoholic aperitifs and No/Low gins.

Plastic top T-cork

The plastic top is, counterintuitively, a premium choice favoured by many alcohol-free mixology brands. The weighted plastic top –  fitted with an internal mass – delivers, on pick-up, a weight and balance comparable to a metallic top, at a controlled production cost and with full design flexibility (colours, finishes including matte, gloss, soft-touch, metallised).

It is particularly suited to ready-to-serve alcohol-free drinks and non-alcoholic aperitifs positioned on contemporary codes.

Zamak top T-cork

Zamak – an alloy of zinc, aluminium, magnesium and copper – produces metallic tops with a weighty and precious feel. This can be chromed, gold-plated, copper-finished, patinated, embossed or enamelled.

This is the choice of premium non-alcoholic spirits brands competing directly with traditional gin, whisky and rum houses.

The specific challenge of non-alcoholic spirits – absolute aromatic neutrality

On a standard 40% ABV spirit, alcohol masks minor deviations. On a 0.0% ABV product, this function disappears. Botanical distillates are fragile and volatile, easily destabilised by external factors, a key challenge in the No/Low market.

P&J applies an anti-TCA protocol: strict plank selection, thermal shock treatment and individual control of premium corks. A TCA-positive cork on a 0.0% gin triggers 100% recall of an entire batch – a risk only integrated and certified manufacturers can eliminate.

Sustainability – why natural cork remains the most responsible choice

Natural cork is the only closure material with a net-negative carbon balance across its full life cycle. A cork oak forest sequesters on average 14 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of cork produced (PwC / APCOR), thanks to bark extraction from the cork oak (Quercus suber) every nine years, without felling the tree.

Portuguese cork oak forests host more than 200 animal and plant species, including the Iberian lynx and the Spanish imperial eagle. Choosing a natural cork T-top places your alcohol-free brand within a value chain with negative carbon footprint and positive biodiversity impact – a decisive argument when 78% of alcohol-free drinks consumers prioritise sustainable brands (NielsenIQ, 2025).
